Alberto Gonzales said he had to let Carol Lam go because of her poor performance as U.S. Attorney in San Diego. The performance he found objectionable was her prosecution of GOP Congressman Duke Cunningham and CIA deputy chief Dusty Foggo, which blew the top off of one of the most spectacular corruption scandals in Washington history, with trails that lead straight into the White House. Today, Lam's colleagues in the San Diego County Bar Association pass judgment on the Gonzales move by naming Carol Lam as the "Outstanding Lawyer of the Year." And the North County Times goes out of its way to remind us of the political underpinnings of the Gonzales decision.
