Senator Mark Pryor of Akansas, a Democrat who supported Gonzales’s confirmation as attorney general, had a forty minute meeting with him today to discuss his decision to fire Bud Cummins in Little Rock. At the end, Pryor announced that Gonzales “lied to me, he lied to the Senate, and he lied to the people I represent.” He demanded Gonzales’s resignation.
Meanwhile, Senators Leahy and Specter—the chair and ranking member of the Judiciary Committee—openly question Gonzales’s memory failures during his April 17 appearance and insist that he should “try harder” to remember his own involvement in the sacking of the eight U.S. attorneys. Their letter.
John McCain today became the third Republican presidential candidate to call on Gonzales to leave.
