From entries to Who Wants to Be a First Lady! a contest held by LiberalHearts.com and PoliticsNH.com last fall to find a wife for Dennis Kucinich, the Democratic presidential candidate from Ohio. During a November 6 debate, Kucinich announced that he was looking for “a dynamic, outspoken woman who was fearless in her desire for peace in the work! and for universal single-payer health care.” Last December he went on a date with Gina Maria Santore, the thirty-four-year-old New Jersey resident who won the contest.

JENNA, Seattle
MAKIN’ THE WHITE HOUSE RIGHTEOUS IN ’04 WITH YA BABE! YOU KNOW IT DARLIN’. i’d love to change the world with you … me and the kiniky! i sit at the edge of my seat as a football fan would watching “the big game” when you speak. i told my mom about the contest and that i was sending in an entry. she chuckled and said “oh no . . . watch out.”

MARGIE, Milton, Wisconsin
Dennis, there are thousands of us that are in love with you and would give our left arm to have a few moments alone with you. That’s our fantasy! In Madison I heard you at the Orpheum and then at the Democratic Convention in Milwaukee, where I was able to shake your hand. It was cold, which seemed impossible after such a fiery speech!

SHIRA, Wisconsin
I am the year of the dog and believe strongly in astrology: the stars say we’re meant to be. Some call me a Nubian princess, and people always ask me if I’m foreign, but I’ve lived in the United States ever since I was three years old and I think I’m a citizen. I think it would be good for Dennis’s campaign to have a first lady with a foreign flava’, I love Canadian folk music, and my favorite movie is South Park! Older men are always surprised to hear my actual age due to my sophisticated demeanor and refined sense of humor.

COUNTRY, Connecticut
I’m an only child of immigrant parents, who has never had a salary above the poverty level and am currently fighting for the house my father built against the Title 19 caseworker who wants to make me homeless to pay for my mother to be in a lousy nursing home. I’m supposed to be an illustrator but put my career on hold to take care of ailing elderly parents. I used to be a vegetarian but cannot afford to be one.

CHRISTINE, Tampa
Are our goals the same? I want to create a Love Nest that is off-the-grid and sustainable. A sociable place that people could visit and learn from and use as a model to create the kind of world we are all envisioning. Rose Garden to Organic Vegetable Garden!

KATE, Los Angeles
i am a student at an art school in los angeles. my major is photography and media, but i also make films, draw, do installations, dance, have a band where i sing, play some guitars and keyboards, etc. the photo is of me at the no war in iraq oscar protest. i dressed in a gown, wig, and tiara and covered myself in blood, cuts, and bullet holes. so, i’rn a little young (twenty-one), but we are all leftists here, let’s not be ageists!

JESSICA, California
My family’s spent summers in NH for over three decades, and now both of my parents live there full-time. I wouldn’t turn down a free ticket home to visit my family, and in fact would enter a contest to win one. Until today, I’d not even heard of Congressman Kucinich. I have no idea what his platform is generally, nor where he stands on specific individual issues, like the right to choose, the death penalty, our nation’s economic and foreign policies, etc. I have no idea how old he is, nor what he looks like. I don’t know any of his personal history. All that said, I feel that I’m as qualified as any other contender here to be his First Lady! Heck, I’m more qualified: I’m young, have never been married, have no children, am Ivy League educated, am self-supporting, and drive a really cute car.

CAROL, Delaware
As a woman, I am looking for a monogamous and loving friendship/relationship/and more with a sexy settled man who is as busy as I am. But a man not too busy to want to spend some quality time getting to know each other and keeping the home fires burning between our busy schedules. Dennis, remember a successful relationship takes two individuals committed to enjoying life and each other, where trust, mutual respect, understanding, and communication play an important role in smoothing out any rough spots that come along the way. I enjoy snow skiing, museums, travel, art, music, ancient ruins, tarot cards, and romantic adventures with an exciting companion. Dennis, could that be you?
