From a press conference given in March by Doug Ford, the premier of Ontario.

reporter: As you have acknowledged, a trade war is going to hurt. Food-bank use was already breaking records before all this. Is there going to be financial support not just for workers who are laid off in affected industries, but for people who might be economically already on the edge?

doug ford: People will need the food bank. If you do have a can of soup, if you have some pasta or tomato sauce or whatever, drop it off at the local food bank. That makes a difference. We have thousands of people dropping off a couple of products to the food bank. It makes a huge difference. But before we wrap up, I want to address something about my phone. Folks, I pride myself on returning my calls. I have over four thousand and thirty-eight messages I have to get back to. Please have patience with me. Don’t get insulted if I don’t get back to you. They are coming in hundreds—if not a thousand—a day, and I cannot keep up. I am up until past midnight every night. For the people that text me throughout the night, please wait until the morning, because I have to keep my phone on. The four hours of sleep I get every night—all I hear is the buzzing beside me. Please. The reason I keep it on is for emergencies, in case there is something catastrophic happening in the province. I respect you calling me, but please have patience. I am doing everything I possibly can to get back to you on my cell phone. Let’s stick together—

reporter: Just a follow-up, sorry.

ford: Send me a message.
