From an August 20, 1978, journal entry by Susan Sontag. As Consciousness Is Harnessed to Flesh, the second of three planned volumes of Sontag’s journals edited by her son, David Rieff, will be published April 10 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Sontag died in 2004.

“I, Etcetera,” another short excerpt from As Consciousness Is Harnessed to Flesh, will appear in the May 2012 issue of Harper’s Magazine.
