“J. D. Salinger’s Closed Circuit,” a critique of Salinger by Mary McCarthy in the October 1962 issue of Harper’s Magazine, makes an appearance in Shane Salerno’s feature documentary, Salinger, which was released today.
“To be confronted with the seven faces of Salinger, all wise and lovable and simple,” McCarthy wrote, “is to gaze into a terrifying narcissus pool. Salinger’s world contains nothing but Salinger, his teachers, and his tolerantly cherished audience — humanity; outside are the phonies, vainly signaling to be let in . . .”
