Political Donations from the Tax Master

Adjust

“Attorney General Greg Abbott filed suit today against Houston-based TaxMasters and CEO Patrick Cox, accusing the company of deceiving customers with tax problems,” reports the Dallas Morning News. “Cox is one of Republican Gov. Rick Perry’s biggest campaign contributors in his reelection race. Cox gave Perry $23,500 in February.

According to the story, the lawsuit filed by the attorney general says “Taxmasters misled customers about their service contract terms, failed to disclose its no-refunds policy and falsely claimed that the firm’s employees would immediately begin work on a case. Abbot says the company’s practice was to not actually start to work on a case until its customers paid in full for services, even if that delayed response meant taxpayers missed significant IRS deadlines.”

It looks like Perry isn’t the only politico to receive money from Cox. According to federal records, he has also contributed to Senators Richard Burr, John Thune, David Vitter and Mitch McConnell, among others. And in April of 2009, Cox donated $30,400 to the National Republican Senatorial Committee as well.
